Geological reasoning: Geology as an interpretive and historical science

چکیده

The standard account of the reasoning process within geology views it as lacking a distinctive methodology of its own. Rather, geology is described as a derivative science, relying on the logical techniques exemplified by physics. I argue that this account is inadequate and skews our understanding of both geology and the scientific process in general. Far from simply taking up and applying the logical techniques of physics, geological reasoning has developed its own distinctive set of logical procedures. I begin with a review of contemporary philosophy of science as it relates to geology. I then discuss the two distinctive features of geological reasoning, which are its nature as (1) an interpretive and (2) a historical science. I conclude that geological reasoning offers us the best model of the type of reasoning necessary for confronting the type of problems we are likely to face in

The Historical Development of the Old-Earth Geological Timescale

This chapter will summarize the historical development of geology and in particular the development of the modern uniformitarian view of the geological record and the millions-of-years time-scale. The important proponents of old-earth thinking (including Werner, Smith, Hutton, Cuvier, and Lyell) along with some of the opponents of this view as it was developing (the scriptural geologists) will ...

A perspective on the emergence of modern structural geology: Celebrating the feedbacks between historical-based and process-based approaches

Structural geology has emerged as an integrative, synthetic science in the past 50 years, focused on deciphering the history preserved in the rock record and determining the processes of rock deformation. Owing to the nature of structural geology, studies focus on historical elements, such as structural inheritance and tectonic history, and increasingly involve theoretical, process-based approa...

Cognitive Science Literature as a Framework for Research and Teaching with Visualizations in Geology

Geology is a complex, semantically rich domain involving the interpretation of geological maps as external visualizations. Geological maps are complex in particular because 3-dimensional features must be inferred from 2-dimensional representations depicted by differing line types and weights. Modeling building, as an internal mental activity, is also required in order to achieve deep understand...

Cognitive Factors Affecting Student Understanding of Geologic Time

In the history of geology there have been two discoveries, plate tectonics and geological time, which have literally defined the way geologists view the earth. The influence of geological t...
